ONE THING on The Optionality Trap

"Optionality is often a trap. Having the setup to run any kind of meeting is less valuable than having the setup that makes your most important meeting extraordinary."

A few weeks ago I looked at my office and realized I had spent years perfecting a setup that no longer fit my needs. I had optimized for more. More pixels. More participants. More screen real estate.

All those options made it difficult to optimize for the one thing that actually matters for most of my client meetings. Creating a safe space.

We as product leaders often fall for this Optionality Trap. We plan meetings for all the edge cases. Too many invites. Too many bots. Too many tools. We do this instead of focusing on the one conversation that actually shifts our company's direction.

Look at your calendar for tomorrow and pick the one meeting that provides the most leverage. Have you optimized the participants, the pre-read, and the setup for what that specific conversation needs to accomplish?

Stop the HiPPOs
I am joining Pragmatic Institute on March 26 to talk about how to keep HiPPOs from running over your roadmap. We will focus on building real ownership instead of just asking for sign-offs. Register for the webinar here.
