When a meeting is going south, it is wise to check your own attitude. We tend to judge other people’s mistakes differently than our own. So give people the benefit of doubt. They are usually trying to do the right thing from their own point of view.

Now, there are times when a stakeholder is not being straight with you, and if that’s the case you need to find out why. Maybe they are playing political games, but more often they are under some sort of pressure you are not aware of. Consider asking them sympathetically (one on one) if everything is OK. Or ask someone who knows them well. Be curious. There is usually more to the story. Got good examples?
