ONE THING on Connecting the Dots

“The CPO’s unique role is to align the executive team on strategy and objectives.”

That’s how a friend of mine, who leads Product at Komodo, defined the CPO role during a recent chat.

As soon as he said it, I knew I had to write it down—because that is the heart of the matter. Everything I do, from the talks I give to the communities I lead, is centered on helping CPOs achieve that executive alignment.

The job isn't "give me a roadmap" or "write the requirements."

Yes, you have to do those things, too. But your true value is connecting the dots. It’s moving the conversation from “here is a list of features” to “let’s agree on where this roadmap is leading us.”

When you do this right, the CPO provides leverage far beyond execution. It creates alignment across the leadership team, builds confidence with investors and customers, and significantly reduces strategic risk for the Board and the CEO.

In fact, short of the CEO, I believe it is the most strategic role in the company.

And this doesn't just apply to CPOs. Whether you're a PM or a VP, your "superpower" isn't writing Jira tickets—it’s connecting the dots for everyone you work with, every day.

My challenge to you this week: Be the connector for your organization.
